Small Sources 20:  These 33 people were tenants of Thomas Lenegan in Pudding Lane, Thurles, Co. Tipperary  in 1816/17.  This is one of the main streets in the town of Thurles and is marked with a red dot in the above map.   The street  has since been renamed as ‘O’Donovan Rossa Street’.  It is unclear if the premises occupied were residences or businesses.   The rental  list is among the Lenegan Estate papers in the National Library of Ireland (NLI Ms. 497).  The name Lenegan is likely to be a variation of Leneghan.    The Lenegan family  had estates in Thurles, Co. Tipperary; and in Co. Kilkenny;  and elsewhere.  This rental also contains lists of tenants in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.

The list below shows the tenant’s names and the yearly rent.  The full list also shows the arrears due in November 1816.  The names are listed as spelled, and with the abbreviations used, e.g. Jas. = James, Danl. = Daniel etc.  One of the unusual names listed is Lanty Ryan.  A Lant Ryan is listed as a householder in Thurles in the Griffith Valuation (~1848),  although on a different street. The illustrations below show a section of the original rental   and the Rental title page (at end).
Ancestor Network will offer 1 free hour of research by a professional researcher to  conduct further research on these individuals or obtain copies. Click here and quote ‘Tipperary SS20′ in the subject line.
Note also that we publish a ‘Guide to Tracing your Tipperary Ancestors‘  by local historian Noreen Higgins-McHugh.   The cover of this title is shown at left.  Note also that there is a  handy map-based index to all of our blogs available here.  These free blogs contain small sources of records  not available elsewhere including 8 blogs for Co.
